description of blog

This photo was taken by our daughter, Sarah Timmons, or my wife, depending on who you ask. We were in Rehoboth Beach, DE on Easter Sunday, 2011.

Several years ago, on the way home from a family vacation, I picked up a notebook and quickly recorded an incident that had occurred involving our son. Eventually, I used that story to illustrate something about my spiritual walk as a believer in Christ. Thus began a deliberate attempt to document the significance of everyday events. Almost any ordinary circumstance in daily life can become fodder for another story. This, almost by definition, lends itself to a blog.

Of course, many of the entries here are just ordinary diary style stuff... the stuff of ordinary blogs. Good grief, I don't want to be ordinary.

Wide River to Cross

I realize I post a lot of music.  I know it doesn't interest everyone like it does me.  I know that no one has the time to take 8 and 1/2 minutes just to listen to two songs.  But that's the perk of having a blog.  And who knows, one of these songs may change your life.

I first heard "Wide River to Cross" performed by Levon Helm on his Dirt Farmer album.  Levon just died on April 19.  He played music up to the day he passed.  Here is a previous post featuring The Band.  And below is Levon singing "Wide River":

The song was written by Buddy and Julie Miller.  Here's Buddy performing it:

Not sure which version I like better.  If I happened to be doing an alternative Christian radio show, both would be at the top of my play list.

Wide River to Cross
by Buddy and Julie Miller

There's a sorrow in the wind
Blowing down the road I've been
I can hear it cry while shadows steal the sun

But I cannot look back now
I've come too far to turn around
And there's still a race ahead that I must run

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I have stumbled, I have strayed
You can trace the tracks I made
All across the memories my heart recalls
But I'm still a refugee, won't you say a prayer for me?
'Cause sometimes even the strongest soldier falls

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things that I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

Want to know why I post lyrics?  It's because I love to look at the words.  And I'm hoping that eventually, osmosis will set in, and I'll write a song.

give this one to Levon.(if for nothing else for the harmony) If Julie had harmonized with Buddy on his version it would have been a toss up. bt

I'm probably with you. The harmony with Levon was Amy Helm and Teresa Williams. Julie Miller does appear on other tracks of Dirt Farmer though.

By the way bt. You get an A+++ for listening to both.

Wow. In one month I've been called eloquent (elsewhere ) and received an A+++. That's a first.

Listened to both, and can't decide which I like best. Sort of like Levon"s soulish sound. Both make me think that we are "Pilgrims in a foreign land traveling on.

I love this song. So heartfelt and so true... There's not a version of this wonderful song (Levon, Buddy, Diana Krall) that does not touch my soul. David

David, I haven't heard the Diana Krall version, but will check it out. Thanks.
